Facebook has quietly rolled out a new feature that lets users know what data it's mining. Here's how to use it.

By now, it’s no secret that Facebook tracks your activity and mines your data to serve you targeted ads. And as executives at Facebook know, people aren’t happy about that. It could be one of the reasons the platform lost 15 million users between 2017 and 2019.
Perhaps in a move to gain back trust, Facebook recently released its Off-Facebook Activity tool. The tool is designed to give you greater control over how your personal data is shared, stored, and tracked—and not only by Facebook but also with a slew of Facebook-affiliated business partners, explains Monica Eaton-Cardone, the owner, co-founder, and COO of Chargebacks911, a fintech cybersecurity company. Here’s a breakdown of what the tool does, how to use it, and what could happen if you don’t.

What the Off-Facebook Activity tool does

“Basically, it allows you to be more protective of your personal privacy. But not completely: Facebook will still track, sort, and sell your data on a macro-level, but it will no longer be associated with your personal account,” says Eaton-Cardone.
Dave Hatter, a cybersecurity consultant at Intrust IT explains, “Unless you are already privacy-minded and have taken steps to limit your digital footprint, you might be surprised, if not shocked, at the number of sites that are sharing information about you with Facebook.” He says that a “staggering quantity of businesses, devices, apps, websites, and data services are selling your data to Facebook,” and that information is used by Facebook to serve up very targeted advertising to you. This tool should help give you back control.

Shayne Sherman, CEO of TechLoris, breaks down the steps. To start, go into Settings, click “Your Facebook Information,” and then click “Off-Facebook Activity.” From there, you have a few choices. You can:
  • View your connections. You can view them all or filter by category.
  • Clear your current history. This will remove all interactions, so you’ll be starting from scratch. Keep in mind that this will even remove connections that you may actually want.
  • Manage future connections. With this, you can block certain apps and websites from attempting to use your Facebook connection in the future.
Which should you choose? It’s really up to you. “By using the menu options, you’ll be able to delete your data, clear your history, and turn off tracking,” Eaton-Cardone explains. “You can opt out of everything, or you could disassociate yourself from specific companies or brands. The ‘Ad Preference’ setting is another option for removing undesirable content from your feed, but only the ‘Off-Facebook Activity’ tool will protect your personal data, too.”

Should you use it?

This is really a personal choice. Not everyone will want to trade in the convenience and personalization that tracking provides. “Some people absolutely love Facebook just the way it is and really enjoy scrolling through the ads and click-bait articles that are tailored for their interests,” says Eaton-Cardone. “They adore seeing these stories and sharing them with their friends. There are also people who—even though I don’t recommend it—use their Facebook accounts to access apps, sites, and other media. If you delete your Facebook data and disable tracking, you’ll no longer see the same ads and articles in your news feed, and you’ll need to create new log-ins for all Facebook-accessed apps and sites.”
On the other hand, says Hatter, “If you choose not to take these steps, Facebook will continue to amass your information.” While Facebook currently claims that it doesn’t sell you information, he asks, will that always be true?
“Whether it ultimately matters or not, I’d always recommend getting to know your software personalization settings,” says Rhea Henry, a digital marketer and content strategist with EnergyRates.ca. “Become familiar with what’s tracking you and do what you can to maintain some semblance of privacy.”

As of publishing time, there have been 554 reported cases of COVID-19 in 34 states across the U.S., and 22 people have died. (You can track the spread of the virus using this helpful tool built by engineers at Johns Hopkins University.) As the disease spreads, people are understandably becoming more anxious about infection, and sometimes you want more detailed prevention tips than just “wash your hands.”

As additional questions arise

Here’s some advice about keeping clean.

What are the best soaps, hand sanitizers, and cleaning products to disinfect me and my surroundings?
The good news is the new coronavirus seems to be pretty easy to kill with common soaps and detergents.
“These are enveloped viruses, which means they… desecrate pretty quickly and they’re a little fragile,” says George Rutherford, a professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco.
Rutherford says that really any soap will do, but you need to be thorough and wash all surfaces of the hand — each finger, the palms, the backs of the hands, the wrists, under the nails — for 20 seconds. If soap and water are unavailable, hand sanitizer will do the trick, but it needs to be at least 60% alcohol to work. As for household surface cleaners, something with bleach is your safest bet.

What about cleaning my cellphone or laptop?

Absolutely clean your cellphone, ideally several times a day. There are special screen and lens cleaning wipes you can buy that contain 70% alcohol and won’t scratch the surface, or you can use an eyeglass cleaner spray, just make sure it has alcohol in it. You can even make your own screen cleaner with rubbing alcohol and distilled water.
“I would be very big on cleaning your phone or things that you have out in public,” Rutherford says. “If you’re sitting around holding your cellphone in front of you and somebody sneezes and you get the particles on your phone, and you keep touching it all the time and then touch your eyes, you’re going to transmit it.”
Your laptop doesn’t require as much attention because you probably don’t use it walking around or on the subway. However, if you do use it out in public, and especially if somebody sneezes on it, be sure to clean it afterward.
This article has been updated with more recent advice.
The coronavirus outbreak is rapidly evolving. To stay informed, check the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as your local health department for updates. If you’re feeling emotionally overwhelmed, reach out to the Crisis Text Line

Know The Surprising Health Benefits Of Walking

This post may contain affiliate links, including Amazon.com(and affiliate Sites/Stores.)Any One Can Shop from this blog.Using links to these sites means I may earn a small percentage from  purchases made at no extra cost to you.

Hey Everyone,

Know The Surprising Health

Benefits

Of Walking

Walking is great for weight loss,

but the benefits go far beyond

from higher energy and better mood to stress relief, creativity boost, and more.

Happiness

Whether you’re just having a down day or a down life, taking a walk can lift your
mood—especially when you go
outdoors, according to a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine. The study participants who averaged 150 minutes of moderate exercise (golf, tennis, aerobics classes, swimming, or line-dancing) or 200 minutes of walking every week reported higher energy levels, better emotional health, and a more robust social life when researchers followed up after three years.

Off-the-charts creativity

Stumped for an idea? Take a quick stroll around the block. Whether you need a solution to a problem at work or you’re looking for inspiration for your novel, walking gets your creative juices flowing in all areas. One Stanford University study found that walking can boost creative

output by 60 percent. The same results were found for both indoor and outdoor workouts, and the creative boost lasted after the walk itself.

Fewer asthma flares

You don’t need to avoid exercise if you have experienced exercise-induced asthma. You just need to find the right exercise in the right conditions. The American College
of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology
says walking, along with swimming, golfing and leisure biking, is less likely to irritate your airways. More generally, look for activities you can do in warm weather and which don’t require significant endurance.

Metabolism to the max

Metabolic syndrome—the evil trifecta of increased blood pressure/cholesterol, high blood sugar, and fat around your waist—is one of the worst side effects of our sedentary lifestyle. It signals diabetes, heart disease, and even early death. But we have an old-fashioned cure to this modern-day disease: exercise. One study published in the Nigerian Medical Journal found that the likelihood of developing
metabolic syndrome decreased by
29 percent simply by walking over an hour a day.

Extra. Years.

Want to live longer? Walk. But speed things up to get the longevity benefit. According to the Mayo Clinic, research has shown that
brisk walking can increase your
lifespan, more so than those who had a slower pace.

Cash in the bank

Fitness can be pricey! Money for a gym membership, home exercise equipment, workout clothes, and shoes adds up fast. But it doesn’t have to. Walking requires absolutely nothing—even shoes are optional!—but still provides great health benefits. And not only does it save you money on things, it also saves you money in healthcare. According to a study in the Journal of the American Heart Association, those who exercised
regularly saved mega dollars when
it came to healthcare costs
compared to those who didn’t meet the minimum weekly exercise requirements (30 minutes or more of moderate-intensity aerobic activity five days a week, or at least 25 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity three days a week).

Zzzzzzzzzz….

Getting a solid eight hours snoozing in the sack is one of the most important things you can do for your health. But sometimes that’s easier said than done. Thankfully a brisk walk may be all you need. According to the Sleep Foundation, researchers have found that people who exercised regularly, including walking, fell asleep more quickly,
slept longer, and had better
quality sleepthan those who did vigorous exercise or lifted weights.

Keep calm and carry on

Raise your hand if you’re stressed out. OK, OK, put both your hands back down. Most of us swim in a pool of stress every day and that takes a serious toll on our mental and physical health.  But science says walking is one of the fastest, most effective ways to calm down. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, a simple 10-minute walk
may be as effective as a 45-minute
workout in terms of reducing
anxiety and depression. Moving clears cortisol, the “stress hormone”, out of your system and also helps stop the never-ending stream of worries going through your mind.

Banish brain drain

It’s official: Walking is also good for your brain. Researchers at New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) discovered that when you walk, your foot’s impact on the ground sends pressure waves through the arteries that increase blood flow to the
brain. Even better, walking protects your brain by lessening your risk of getting cognitive illnesses like Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.

Drug-free painkiller

Chronic pain has been called a silent epidemic, with an estimated 100 million Americans currently living with it. And if you’re one of those people battling daily pain the last thing you probably want to do is get up and go for a walk. But a study published in the Annals of Rehabilitative Medicine found that a regular walking routine
diminished chronic lower back
pain in study participants. Walking may not be able to cure chronic pain, but it can help you deal with it better.

Beefed-up bones

Bone density may not be one of the most exciting health benefits of walking, but it’s an important one. People with stronger bones avoid osteoporosis and all the problems that come with it like fractures, disability, and spine shrinkage (seriously, you can get shorter). And the best way to get strong, healthy bones is by doing weight-bearing exercises like running, dancing and, yes, walking, says the American Bone Health Association. Researchers found that walking programs that lasted more than six months were associated with “significant and positive effects”
in bone density of the hip bone.

X-Ray vision

OK, so maybe you won’t have the ability to see through walls but you can protect your vision as you age by taking a daily walk, according to a study published in The Journal of Neuroscience. Researchers found that people who did regular aerobic activity had healthier eyeballs and were less likely to suffer from problems like retinal degeneration and age-related vision loss. So even if you aren’t Superman, you’ll still have super sight.

Quality time with loved ones

Taking a walk alone can be great for clearing your head or blowing off some steam but walking can also provide a great opportunity to bond with friends and family—far away from electronics and other distractions at home. Even better, you set a powerful example because when they see you reaping the benefits of walking, they’ll be encouraged to walk more, too

Free miracle drug

Exercise in general, and walking in particular, has been referred to as a “miracle drug” for its ability to lower risk for chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke,
Type 2 diabetes, and some cancers. Let’s be honest, there doesn’t seem to be a single health condition that it can’t help in some way. And unlike real drugs, walking has no side effects, is easily accessible, affordable, effective, and best of all you don’t need a prescription!

Hope You Enjoyed Reading This.
