As of publishing time, there have been 554 reported cases of COVID-19 in 34 states across the U.S., and 22 people have died. (You can track the spread of the virus using this helpful tool built by engineers at Johns Hopkins University.) As the disease spreads, people are understandably becoming more anxious about infection, and sometimes you want more detailed prevention tips than just “wash your hands.”

As additional questions arise, 

Here’s some advice about keeping clean.

What are the best soaps, hand sanitizers, and cleaning products to disinfect me and my surroundings?

The good news is the new coronavirus seems to be pretty easy to kill with common soaps and detergents.

“These are enveloped viruses, which means they… desecrate pretty quickly and they’re a little fragile,” says George Rutherford, a professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California, San Francisco.

Rutherford says that really any soap will do, but you need to be thorough and wash all surfaces of the hand — each finger, the palms, the backs of the hands, the wrists, under the nails — for 20 seconds. If soap and water are unavailable, hand sanitizer will do the trick, but it needs to be at least 60% alcohol to work. As for household surface cleaners, something with bleach is your safest bet.

What about cleaning my cellphone or laptop?

Absolutely clean your cellphone, ideally several times a day. There are special screen and lens cleaning wipes you can buy that contain 70% alcohol and won’t scratch the surface, or you can use an eyeglass cleaner spray, just make sure it has alcohol in it. You can even make your own screen cleaner with rubbing alcohol and distilled water.

“I would be very big on cleaning your phone or things that you have out in public,” Rutherford says. “If you’re sitting around holding your cellphone in front of you and somebody sneezes and you get the particles on your phone, and you keep touching it all the time and then touch your eyes, you’re going to transmit it.”

Your laptop doesn’t require as much attention because you probably don’t use it walking around or on the subway. However, if you do use it out in public, and especially if somebody sneezes on it, be sure to clean it afterward.

Think beyond the tennis court 

Tennis balls can help you park the car, fluff up your laundry, and get a better night’s sleep.

Fluff Up Feathers

Throw one or two tennis balls like these into the dryer the next time you dry down-filled items like pillows, comforters, and jackets. They’ll ditch the flat look they get from the washing machine and puff up again. 

Relieve sore feet

Take a load off your aching feet and give them a treat. Put a tennis ball on the floor. Remove your shoes, and place your foot on top of the tennis ball. Now roll the ball around with your foot.

Massage your back too

Drop a few tennis balls into a long tube sock and tie the end shut. Now pretend the tube sock is a towel and move it across your back the way you would if you were drying off after a shower.

Make a mini toolbox

Cut a slit in a tennis ball and squeeze it to widen the split. Toss in some nails, then stop squeezing the ball to close up the toolbox. Carry it with you around the house or in the yard and squeeze it any time you need a nail. Genius! 

Save your socks

Don’t toss your sock just because it has a small hole in the toe or the heel. Place a tennis ball in the toe or heel (wherever it needs to be mended). The tennis ball will stretch out the surface of the sock so that sewing it will be easier.

Keep your bike level

Help your bicycle’s kickstand do its job (keeping your bike standing) and prevent it from sinking into the grass or mud by using a tennis ball. How? Cut a slit in the ball and slip it over the end of the kickstand. If you ever find yourself at the beach with your bike, this trick will stop the kickstand from sinking into the sand too.

Open bottles with ease

Twist-off bottle caps never seem to come off the way they should. To make it easier, cut a tennis ball in half, then cover the bottle cap with one half and twist it off without a problem. 

Soften a hammer’s blow

Whether you need to gently nudge some woodwork back into place or tap a nail into soft wood, place a tennis ball with a slit in the middle over your hammer. The tennis ball will treat your job gently.

Park perfectly

Parking your car in the garage is an art: You have to pull only so far forward (but far enough!) and only so close to each wall (but not too close!) Take the guesswork out of the equation by hanging a tennis ball on a string from the ceiling or rafters of the garage so that it hits the center of your windshield when you park correctly. You’ll never have to guess where the car goes.

Sand curvy furniture

Voluptuous furniture is pretty but refinishing it can be an ugly job. Make it easier by covering a tennis ball in sandpaper and using the ball to sand the curves.

Stop snoring

People who snore tend to do so more often when they sleep on their backs. Stop a back sleeper in his tracks by attaching a tennis ball to the back of a person’s pajama top (safety pin a sock on the PJs and insert a tennis ball, or sew a pocket in the back of the pajama shirt). When the snorer turns onto his back, the tennis ball will prevent him from getting comfortable and he’ll return to his side (where he may snore less).


Keep swimming pool oil-free

Float a couple of tennis balls in your swimming pool to absorb body oils from swimmers. Replace the balls every couple of weeks during high-use periods.

Cover your trailer hitch

To protect chrome trailer hitches from scratches and rust, cut a tennis ball and slip it over your hitching ball. The tennis ball will keep moisture out and rust away.

Store your valuables at gym

Here’s a neat way to hide and store valuables when you’re working out at the gym. Make a 2-inch (5-centimeter) slit along one seam of a tennis ball and insert the valuables inside. Keep the ball in your gym bag among other sporting gear. Just remember not to use the doctored ball next time you’re out on the tennis court!

Find out how bread, milk, hair spray and more can be used to remove stains from your favorite clothes.

Artificial sweetener

If you are out to dinner at a restaurant, or even if grease splatters on you while you are cooking, use artificial sweetener immediately to blot the stain. The fine powder will absorb the oil. You may have to keep blotting and using more sweetener, but it really works! And artificial sweetener is always handy at any eatery.

Milk

To remove ink stains from colored clothes, an overnight milk bath will often do the trick. Just soak the affected garment in milk overnight and launder as usual the next day.

Shampoo

Got ring around the collar? Cheap hair shampoo will break down body oils and act as a detergent.

Hair Spray

Your toddler just went wild with a ballpoint pen on your new white shirt. Squirt the stain with hair spray and the pen marks should come right off.

Toothpaste

Oh no, a pen opened up in the pocket of your favorite shirt! This may or may not work, depending on the fabric and the ink, but it is certainly worth a try before consigning the shirt to the scrap bin. Put non-gel toothpaste on the stain and rub the fabric vigorously together. Rinse with water. Did some of the ink come out? Great! Repeat the process a few more times until you get rid of all the ink. The same process works for lipstick.

Bread

Tear out the doughy center of white bread and knead it into a ball, then blot the smear repeatedly with the dough until the stain lifts from the fabric. Now wash the garment. The dough ball is also safe to use on lipstick marks on dry-clean only wool clothing.

Shaving cream tomato-sauce remover

Take a can of non-gel shaving cream and spray it onto the stain, rub it in gently and let it dry before washing as normal. Shaving cream can also remove stains from your carpet, too. 

Cola

It can all-too-easily happen: you’re near the end of a bike ride when your front wheel hits a pothole, sending you and the bike clattering to the ground. Hopefully, all that’s hurt is your pride and a bleeding elbow, which manages to leave bloodstains all over your clothes. It seems ridiculous, but soaking bloodstains overnight in cola removes them. Try it, it may sound insane, but it actually works!
