Oops, wrong number! D’oh, stupid autocorrect! Gah, why did I think texting my ex was a good idea?!

We’ve all had our share of cringe-worthy texts that we regret the moment we send them. In the past, you haven’t had too many options: send a quick apology, hope the other person will gloss over your oversight, or block that contact and delete all evidence of your lapse in judgment. Thankfully, that all ends today. 

onsecondthought is an app that lets you take back your texts after hitting send. It syncs with your usual texting program to let you message everyone on your contact list as usual, just in a different app—and with some nifty “unsend” features that prevent endless embarrassment.

The app lets you choose a “grace period” of up to 60 seconds after you hit send when you can delete the message. Even if the other person doesn’t have On Second Thought, you can either recall the text to edit it or delete it completely. Either way, your almost-recipient will be none the wiser, and you get to save face.

If you have a habit of sending unfortunate texts that you regret the next day, onsecondthought has another solution. During periods of time when you don’t quite trust yourself to make great texting decisions—say, when grabbing drinks with that pot-stirring friend who always convinces you to call out your ex—the app can set up a “curfew.” Any texts you try to send during that time will be held until morning. In the morning, when your head is clear, you can decide whether you want to follow through with sending them. 

The unsend app isn’t available on the Apple App Store yet, but you can download it from Google Play. So far, users seem to appreciate it; OnSecondThought has earned an average of 4.1 stars out of 830 reviews. Rest assured, your reputation will be saved.

The prospect of getting spied on when you’re staying in a hotel is scary, but there are some things you can do to protect yourself.

When you’re staying in a hotel for vacation or work, the last thing you want to think about is that someone may be spying on you. But it can happen. In 2018, a Chicago woman sued Hilton for $100 million, claiming that she was filmed in the shower at a hotel and later blackmailed, according to CNN.

It’s not hard to plant a camera in a hotel room and no organization specifically tracks these types of crimes, security experts say.

“One of the reasons this is happening is because of the ready availability of low-cost camera technology,” says Jack Plaxe, founder and managing director of Security Consulting Alliance. Cameras with pinhole lenses that can be easily concealed are available through Amazon and other shopping sites for less than $100.”Anybody who has the intention of doing this can purchase something that will work.”

And today’s spy cameras are so small that if they’re properly concealed, there is no telltale sign, says Mike O’Rourke, CEO of Advanced Operational Concepts. Many come already installed in clock radios, smoke detectors, lamps, and other portable devices. 

People who place hidden cameras in hotel rooms may be looking for anything from compromising photos of people to trade secrets, security experts say. That said, Plaxe and O’Rourke say they don’t think the use of hidden cameras is as much of a problem in hotels in the United States.

“Overall in America, there is little worry in the larger and more prominent chains,” says O’Rourke. “Concern increases the further off-brand and lower budget one goes. Internationally, the opposite is true, especially in countries known to target business travelers.”

So while it can be almost impossible for an untrained eye to spot a hidden camera, there are some things you can do to reduce your risk:

Survey the room

Look for pieces of furniture or appliances that are in unusual places, Plaxe says. For example, a lamp that’s been placed in an unusual location and appears to be specifically angled toward the bed. If you have any suspicions, report them to hotel management.

Disconnect the alarm clock

If there is a bedside clock, O’Rourke unplugs it and places it in a drawer. When it’s anchored in place, he covers it with a towel. “If the clock is returned to its place or uncovered, I either have a problem or a detail-oriented housekeeping staff,” he says.

Cover the peephole on your door

People have used peephole reversers to film inside hotel rooms. “Sports reporter Erin Andrews was victimized in this manner a decade ago, and she won a multi-million-dollar settlement in court,” O’Rourke says.

Don’t use your laptop in expected locations

You may want to take additional precautions if you’re traveling in countries where trade secrets are targeted, such as China or Russia. “Cameras may be pointed at desks to capture computer passwords and other sensitive information,” O’Rourke says. Avoid using your laptop where criminals think you will—including the hotel lobby.

How much thought do you pay to your car key fob? This piece of plastic may be little, but can help you do more than just unlocking your car.

Start your car remotely

In some cars, your car key fob can remote start your vehicle during chilly days, depending on whether or not idling is legal in your state. Just look for the remote engine start button often labeled with a circular arrow, Consumer Reports says.

Lower your windows

But did you know you can also use your key fob to catch a breeze? HuffPost reports the key fob for many cars now can roll down all windows at once. Try pressing your unlock button twice, holding down the second time until all windows are open.

Fold in your mirrors

If you’ve maneuvered your car into a tight parking space, your key fob can help make sure your side view mirrors don’t get knocked off when someone else is squeezing by. For cars that don’t do this automatically when they lock, try holding the key fob lock button for ten seconds. Consumer Reports says this feature tends to be available on newer Chevrolet and GMC pickup trucks.

Unlock your trunk

In older cars, you may have had to use a mechanical key to get back in the trunk, but now many newer models have key fobs that allow you to open your back hatch with just the click of a button.

Start your car

Keyless ignition systems are becoming more common, with 62 percent of cars sold last year having this feature, Edmunds reports. Should you choose to go keyless on your next model, your fob can serve as a way to start or stop your car as long as the fob is in the car with you and your foot is on the brake. Just make sure to never leave your key fob—or any of these things—in your car.

Stay safe at night

The key fob of almost every car has a “panic” button which will set off your emergency alert systems, helping you find your vehicle in the most crowded parking garage. But if the garage is deserted, setting off this feature can also help ward off would be-criminals, says RepairPal.

Prevent home break-ins

The attention-grabbing blare of your car’s alarm system can also prevent home break-ins. If your key fob works on your car from within your home, keep it by your nightstand, says RepairPal. If you hear something in the night, hitting the panic button can scare off criminals and is one of several things you can do to save your home from a break-in.

Unlock your car

OK, this one may seem obvious… unless you have a keyless car and a fob with a dead battery. As keyless ignitions become more popular, fewer and fewer cars operate with traditional mechanical keys. The problem here? The fob that unlocks the car by sending computer signals to the vehicle can run out of batteries. Luckily, Toyota says the fobs for its keyless cars also have a mechanical key tucked in them should this be the case.

Adjust your seat

Sharing your car with a gentle giant or someone whose legs just don’t have the same reach as yours? GMC offers some models that allow you to set a “memory” of where you like your seat. Each key fob is assigned a different number, so when you get in the car, it knows who’s driving. From there, you can set your seat preference and go. Park in tight spaces

Never again worry about scraping another vehicle. The car key fob for Teslas can be used to park your car in tight spaces, says Business Insider. The driver doesn’t even need to be inside. The “summon” feature will stop when obstacles are detected and even close your garage door for you.
