Oops, wrong number! D’oh, stupid autocorrect! Gah, why did I think texting my ex was a good idea?!

We’ve all had our share of cringe-worthy texts that we regret the moment we send them. In the past, you haven’t had too many options: send a quick apology, hope the other person will gloss over your oversight, or block that contact and delete all evidence of your lapse in judgment. Thankfully, that all ends today. 

onsecondthought is an app that lets you take back your texts after hitting send. It syncs with your usual texting program to let you message everyone on your contact list as usual, just in a different app—and with some nifty “unsend” features that prevent endless embarrassment.

The app lets you choose a “grace period” of up to 60 seconds after you hit send when you can delete the message. Even if the other person doesn’t have On Second Thought, you can either recall the text to edit it or delete it completely. Either way, your almost-recipient will be none the wiser, and you get to save face.

If you have a habit of sending unfortunate texts that you regret the next day, onsecondthought has another solution. During periods of time when you don’t quite trust yourself to make great texting decisions—say, when grabbing drinks with that pot-stirring friend who always convinces you to call out your ex—the app can set up a “curfew.” Any texts you try to send during that time will be held until morning. In the morning, when your head is clear, you can decide whether you want to follow through with sending them. 

The unsend app isn’t available on the Apple App Store yet, but you can download it from Google Play. So far, users seem to appreciate it; OnSecondThought has earned an average of 4.1 stars out of 830 reviews. Rest assured, your reputation will be saved.

Got a wet cell phone? A shattered screen? These smartphone repair techniques should do the trick.

Restore your charge

If your phone won’t charge when plugged in, the cord might not be the problem. The charging port often accumulates debris which can cause it to charge slower or not at all. Fortunately, there’s a low-tech solution. “You can use a safety pin and run it around the inside of the port on your phone to clear it out,” recommends Shayne Sherman, CEO of TechLoris. “If your phone isn’t charging, give this a try before buying a new cord.

Clean up fuzzy noise

Turned off by inferior sound when you plug speakers into your headphone jack? Dirt can cause your device to stop turning on or prevent you from hearing your phone calls, says Liz Hamilton, director of People and Customers at Mobile Klinik, a mobile phone repair business.

“Cleaning out your charge port can be done carefully with a few quick blasts of compressed air to the area, or even with a Q-tip (remove some of the cotton if you have to get it to fit) and use a high alcohol content cleaner to wipe out the area,” Hamilton says.

Replace a shattered screen

“If you’re tech-savvy and willing to risk your expensive device that has many fragile and tiny parts, you can probably fix a screen yourself,” Hamilton says. But you’ll need the right tools for this smartphone repair job, she adds.

And it’s easier to replace the screen on some devices than others. For iPhones, for example, iFixit.com recommends applying some heat to soften the adhesive, keeping the screen on, and using opening picks to slice the adhesive apart in order to carefully pry the screen off. That said, replacing a cracked screen is more involved on Android devices such as the Samsung Galaxy series, says Craig Lloyd of iFixit. For example, you’ll need to take the back glass panel off first, which adds steps and complexity to the repair.

Resurrect a soaked phone

If your phone takes an unexpected swim, don’t follow the common wisdom to place it in a bag of rice. Instead, the first thing you should do for smartphone repair? Simply remove the phone from the water source and turn the phone off immediately. “Let it dry completely before attempting to turn it back on,” Lloyd says. “You can use a blow dryer on a cool setting to help dry out ports and such.” Some experts also recommend placing the phone in a box with packets of silica gel that come with shoes.

If your phone still isn’t working, though, many experts recommend that the safest bet for water damage is to turn off your phone and take it to a professional. “Good professionals will give you a free diagnosis and quote before any work is done and the best professionals won’t charge you if they can’t fix it, regardless of the efforts they take to save your device,” Hamilton says.

Replace the battery

Wouldn’t it be great if it were as easy to replace the batteries in your phone as it is to switch out the ones in your remote control? Unfortunately, batteries are glued down in most phones, so replacing them is more of an involved process for smartphone repair. iFixit has detailed instructions to replace the battery in a Samsung Galaxy S8. Putting in a new battery is easier in iPhones, however, because they have handy pull tabs on the adhesive that makes battery removal a bit easier, Lloyd says. 

Improve a mediocre lens

Salvage a DVD player’s lens—the little piece that guides the disc-reading laser—and use it on your phone’s camera. Put the lens on top of a small piece of painter’s tape, cut a hole for it to peek through, and mount it over your phone’s lens with extra strips of tape for better pictures.

How does it work?

Is there really a “Do Not Call” List? If so, does it even work? Here are the answers you need to stop the barrage of sales calls.

Yes, there is a National Do Not Call List

You’ve probably learned that responding to an unwanted phone call with a “Don’t call this number” and hanging up won’t do much to stop unwanted calls. What could help is registering for the “National Do Not Call List” the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) opened 15 years ago. Well over 200 million phone numbers are registered. Learn how to get rid of those annoying telemarketers. 

The DNC List only prohibits sales calls

An important thing to know about the National Do Not Call List—it can only stop sales calls. You may continue to receive:

• political calls
• charitable calls
• debt collection calls
• informational calls
• telephone survey calls

Not all sales calls are prohibited

Even if you’re on the National Do Not Call List, you may still get sales calls from companies with whom you’ve recently done business; likewise, you may receive calls if you’ve given a company written permission to call you. To stop these calls, you will have to ask the company not to call you again—preferably in writing. At that point, the company is legally required to honor your request.

Not all companies are operating legally

Most legitimate companies will observe the National Do Not Call List and not call if you’re registered. However, since 2009 the FTC has seen a significant increase in the volume of illegal sales calls, including from companies that flat-out ignore the DNC List. One reason for this is the rise of robocalling, a practice that is completely illegal for the purpose of sales. Robocalling is permitted only by political candidates and charities. 

What to do if you get an unwanted phone call

If you receive a sales call despite being on the National Do Not Call List, or if you ever receive a sales robocall, you should hang up immediately, recommends the FTC. In addition to the call being illegal, it’s likely the company is promoting some sort of scam. In addition, the FTC encourages you to file a complaint.

What you should never do if you get an unwanted phone call

Don’t speak. Don’t press buttons. Don’t follow any directions, and please be aware that no company making a sales call has the power to put you on the Do Not Call List. Remember that any company offering to take you off its call list by following directions (pressing buttons, speaking to a live representative, etc.), is probably going to continue calling you, and perhaps even more often, according to the FTC.

What the FTC does when you file a complaint

Anyone who violates the list can be fined up to $41,484 per call, the FTC states. So far, the FTC has sued hundreds of companies responsible for unwanted calls and has obtained over a billion dollars in judgments against violators. So by registering, you’re helping to provide the FTC with more ammunition in the fight against illegal phone calls.

How to register

The easiest way to register for the National Do Not Call List is to call 1-888-382-1222 from the phone you want to register (TTY: 1-866-290-4236). You can also register by visiting donotcall.gov. If you register online, you’ll receive an email containing a link you’ll need to click on within 72 hours, or your registration will not be completed.

Don’t let—or pay—someone to do it for you

The FTC urges everyone to register only their own number and to never pay anyone who claims they will register your number. You—and only you—should register your phone number with the DNC List. 

How many numbers can you register at a time?

If you use the Do Not Call List link, you can register up to three phone numbers at any given time. If you have more than three to register, you will have to go through the registration process again. For each number you register, you will receive an email. If you wish to register more than three numbers, you can make another registration.

Please be patient because there could be a lag

The FTC says that although your registration will be completed on the spot, the info can take up to 31 days to reach companies and for them to stop calling.

Do you have to give the FTC your email?

If you register for the DNC List online, yes. But the FTC specifies, “While we do collect an email address, it is collected only to confirm your registration. We do not keep it or store it with your phone number.” 

The list is only for personal phone numbers

Business-to-business calls and faxes are not covered. However, you might be able to find a way in these tips on opting out of basically everything.

Don’t believe the viral lies about the National Do Not Call List

Please don’t believe the false rumors circulating about the registry:

• The government is not releasing cell phone numbers to telemarketers.
• There isn’t a deadline for registering a cell phone number on the DNC List.
• There is only one DNC List, and it’s operated by the FTC.
• The DNC List accepts registrations from both cell phones and landlines.

If you have registered a mobile or other telephone number already, you’ll never need to re-register.

You can take your number off the list

You can delete your number by calling 1-888-382-1222 from the telephone number you want to delete. Your number will be off the registry the next day, and telemarketing lists will be updated within 31 days. Next, find out the secrets an identity thief definitely doesn’t want you to know

You can’t just screen my calls using caller ID. How can you make me go away for good?

With odds so low, out of sheer desperation, we will be relentless in trying to keep you on the phone. You can’t just screen my calls using caller ID. If you don’t pick up, I mark your lead (our lingo for file) as “no answer,” and the system programs another call for a few days later. If my company does not have a large lead pool, you may get called as soon as 12 hours later. If you’re dealing with this kind of aggressive campaign, it’s actually better to answer than to let the phone keep ringing.

When you answer, I’ll try to sell the product to you using the Three Noes rule: Don’t let the customer go until she has said no three times during the phone call. After the first two noes, the client becomes more likely to spend money. If you don’t purchase the item, I will log everything you’ve said and suggest calling you back another time. These are logged as “callbacks”—tiny gold nuggets for telemarketers to follow up on. And thus, the cycle continues. Now that you know how I work, here’s how to make me go away for good. 

Don’t immediately hang up

If you do, I’ll mark your lead as “no answer”—the same status as if you had never picked up in the first place. Then I will call you back until I have a conversation with you. And if you hang up mid-conversation without an explanation, I will most likely call you back and claim that you got disconnected. 

Don’t engage me in any way

Interaction gives me the false hope that you may just need some convincing to buy my product. Do not ask any questions. Do not try to explain why you are not interested in the product. Do not show empathy, compassion, or any other human characteristic.

Stay cool—anger won’t help you

Remember, the computer chose your lead—I didn’t. If you scream at me because you’ve gotten called before, it’s likely I’ll just put you back into the lead pool to torture you. If you think I’m being rude, you can ask to speak to a manager. Despite what I might say, every business has a supervisor in the call room. 

Say the magic words

The most efficient way to get me to stop calling you requires that you say one sentence: “Please put me on your do-not-call list.” If I ask why, be polite—but firm—and repeat, “I want you to put me on your do-not-call list.” 

Seal my fate

Sign up on the National Do Not Call Registry (donotcall.gov), which makes it illegal for companies to contact you more than once.

The solution for getting rid of telemarketers may seem obvious, but it's mostly about the approach. By using those exact words and not making any of the mistakes previously mentioned, you don't give the caller anything to work with. The way you phrase your response can mean the difference between getting called all the time and getting rid of telemarketers efficiently. Make the right choices and you won't be bothered.
