Whether in the local farmers market or the big electronics retailer. Use these strategies to pick up a bargain.

Be Polite

The art of negotiation is a delicate one, and your language needs to reflect that. So be friendly and ask, "Is there any discount, please,?" Make an offer that's slightly lower than your goal price so you have room to cut a deal.

Look for Imperfections.

Don't pass over an item that may be flawed. While looking at a top- brand non-stick pan at a big department store, one customer noticed a tiny, harmless scratch on it. He asked a shop assistant to talk to his manager about a discount - and got Rs 150/- off. This even easier with clothes that may have a button off or a stain.

Negotiate a deal

"While I was buying a washing machine and a TV," says another customer, " they offered me extended warranties at a price. I said 'I'm buying two big things from you, so you could give me that for, free and I got it for the TV" Don't feel shy to ask for deals just because it's a big shop. You have to ask, and you may get gifts as well.

Shop late

Shopping at a veg / fruit market at the day's end has advantages- vendors may slash prices to sell what remains.

Carry Less Cash

"While shopping on Mumbai' street for books or veggies, I've often got friendly bargains when I tell vendors that all I have left is Rs 25 or Rs 80,"says one senior citizen."They then just want those 20 or 80 bucks from you."

Opt for online

Haggling is expected on items, both new and used, on sites like OLX and Quikr. Sellers often just want to get rid of extra gifts after weddings, or items they don't need. You're helping them de-clutter so haggle kindly.
